In short

HK Lighting is an outdoor lighting maker in Thousand Oaks, California, founded by industrial designer Hiroshi Kira. Its residential collection covers accent, flood, path, in-grade, and security lights machined from billet aluminum or solid brass with marine-grade finishes. We specify HK for Chicago and North Shore homes because the fixtures hold their aim and finish for years, and their LED modules and optics can be changed without digging them out. r:home is an HK Lighting dealer.

History

Where HK comes from

Hiroshi Kira was born in 1936 in Tokamachi, Japan, moved to the United States in 1956 to study at California State University, Long Beach, and joined the industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss in 1962.

In 1986 he introduced the Lumiere 203, one of the first outdoor accent lights. HK says its compact housing was the first to safely enclose the then-new MR16 lamp without overheating, and its swivel-and-lock aiming set the pattern for the category. His patents on fixture architecture, LED modules, and field-serviceable parts still shape HK’s designs.

What makes an architectural fixture worth it

The aim holds. A swivel-lock mechanism keeps the fixture pointed where we set it through frost, mowers, and curious dogs.
Parts change in the field. LED modules, lenses, and optics swap out on site, so a fixture can grow with the tree instead of being replaced.
Glare stays hidden. Glare shields and louvers keep the source out of view from the terrace and the street.
Color reads true. 90 CRI light shows foliage as green and limestone as limestone.
It dims properly. MLV dimming on the integrated LED accent lights lets Lutron set real late-evening levels.
It’s rated for the long haul. HK rates its integrated LED fixtures for 50,000 hours.

Amber light near ravines and the lake

HK offers narrow-band amber LEDs on select Sentinel fixtures for wildlife-sensitive lighting. On properties that back onto North Shore ravines or the lakefront, we use amber or keep light low and aimed away from the habitat.

Solar where wire can’t go

Radius Solar puts HK’s path light where trenching isn’t practical, such as across a finished terrace or at the far end of a garden. HK builds it to the same standard as its wired fixtures.

HK Lighting questions

Are HK Lighting fixtures brass or aluminum?

Both. HK says its residential fixtures are machined from aircraft-grade billet aluminum with marine-grade finishes. Some fixtures, such as the ARTOGL1 in-grade light, are solid brass, and HK’s architectural line offers natural brass, silver nickel, and black oxide.

Can I buy HK Lighting fixtures myself?

HK sells its residential collection through professional dealers. Fixtures perform best when they’re designed as a system, with transformers sized for the run and each light aimed at night.

Do HK fixtures work with Lutron?

Yes. HK rates its integrated LED accent lights for MLV dimming, and its Sentinel area lights for MLV or ELV phase dimming. We pair them with transformers and Lutron dimming suited to each circuit.

How long do HK LED fixtures last?

HK rates its integrated LED accent and Sentinel fixtures for 50,000 hours and its lamp-based SORAA models for 35,000 hours. The LED module and optics can be replaced in the field.

What is HK’s adjustable beam?

The ARTOAL16 accent light and the Sentinel ARTOSLA16 let us set the beam anywhere from a 14° spot to a 70° flood on site, and reset it later as a tree grows.
