DMF on the house, HK in the garden
DMF Lighting makes recessed downlights and cylinders, and HK Lighting is its sister brand for outdoor and landscape fixtures. Why the house and garden should match
When the downlights over the door come from one maker and the uplights on the trees come from another, the two rarely agree on color. The porch looks pink, the oak looks yellow, and the house looks lit in pieces. Specifying DMF and HK together, at the same color temperature, avoids that.
DMF describes the pairing directly: from recessed downlights and linear lighting inside to HK’s outdoor fixtures, one cohesive lighting approach across the property. Inside, DMF’s Artafex line is built for integrators and works with control systems such as Lutron.
Warm Dim at the front door
Warm Dim downlights get warmer as they dim, the way an incandescent lamp did. At full they light the steps clearly. Late in the evening they settle into a low amber that doesn’t glare into the street.
Dark Sky where it counts
DMF lists Dark Sky ratings on its X Series downlight and 4-inch cylinder. Those keep light pointed down, off the neighbors’ windows and out of the sky.
Exterior downlight questions
Can recessed lights go in an exterior soffit or porch ceiling?
Yes, if they’re rated for the location. The electrical code treats a roofed open porch as a damp location, but wind-driven rain and snow reach most Chicago porches, so we specify wet-location fixtures anyway. DMF says its standard recessed downlights become wet-location rated once the trim is twisted and locked in place.
Which DMF fixtures shouldn’t go outside?
DMF’s adjustable downlights have moving parts that keep them from a wet rating. They’re damp rated, so we keep them to protected spots and use fixed downlights anywhere weather can reach.
What color temperature should exterior downlights be?
We match the landscape, usually 2700K. At the front door, Warm Dim fixtures get warmer as they dim, which looks right for a late-evening porch.
Do DMF downlights work with Lutron?
DMF downlights are made to dim with common residential controls. We confirm the driver and dimmer pairing for each fixture before anything is ordered.
